White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, contains the largest gypsum dune field of its kind on earth. The National Monument is completely surrounded by military installations, including White Sands Missile Range. Near the north boundary of White Sands Missile Range, at Trinity Site, the first atomic bomb test was exploded on July 16, 1945.
